I promised my kiddos that I'd post on the website when our new family addition arrived! We were happy to welcome ANOTHER boy on August 21st. Meet Louie Housman. I am so blessed to enjoy a different kind of busy this fall while on leave. :) My heart is so full! Best wishes to you all this school year and I'm hoping our paths cross soon!
Dear First Grade Families,
As summer is right around the corner, I want to take this opportunity to thank you! It has been a pleasure working with your children this year and I have valued the partnerships we have built. I am so proud of the gains your children have made and can't wait to continue watching them grow. I am confident that their transition into second grade will be a smooth one. We're spending our last few days participating in fun activities and enjoying the positive learning community we've worked hard to create. I feel so lucky that you have shared your children with me this year and I thank you for your support. I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing summer! Respectfully, Liz Housman Wow, we had a busy short week! Our class had a fabulous time on our field trip to Stages Theatre. We had read several versions of Stone Soup, so it was very interesting to compare and contrast the play. Thank you for supporting these special learning opportunities for your child. We really appreciate it! Here are some pictures of the class waiting for the play to begin and the fun bus ride! Dear Woodland Parent/Guardian,
Woodland Elementary is participating in the 8th Annual Neighborhood Forest program, whose aim is to provide free trees to kids to plant on Earth Day. We endorse this project and are excited to give kids a way to beautify and green our communities. Fill out the following online registration form by April 15 and receive a free tamarack tree (6-12 inches in size) during Earth Week (April 22-28). Planting instructions and species information will be emailed a few days prior to the trees arriving. Register (on a laptop, tablet or desktop computer) to receive a free tamarack tree for Earth Day to plant with your child: http://www.neighborhoodforest.org/search-for-school/ Thank you for your support and participation. For more information about this program, please visit www.neighborhoodforest.org. The Woodland Elementary Green Team Woodland Elementary First Grade “Spring Sing”
When: Thursday, April 20th, 2017, 3:00pm Where: Eagle’s Nest Cafeteria Our annual program of spring songs performed for WD Kindergarten and Four Star Express classes. This program is specifically designed to provide a casual first performance experience for First Grade students in a comfortable, informal, and supportive environment. In this program students learn and practice the basics of performing, including following directions with brain, body, and voice. Likewise, the young students attending this program practice how to be attentive audience members during programs at Woodland. Parents of First Graders are welcome to attend this informal music share. When we conclude our singing at 3:30, students will return to their classrooms to complete their school day! Let us know if you have any questions! Would you love to help children grow their reading or math skills, succeed in school and get extra support? If your answer is yes, you can be trained to serve as a tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps or Minnesota Math Corps and work at Woodland Elementary! Whether you want to explore an educational career, re-enter the workforce, or give back to your community, you can succeed as a tutor. Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps have provided direct services to over 35,000 children in more than 700 schools across the state. See the attached document for details on how you can become a Minnesota Reading or Math Corps Tutor!
Dear Families,
Woodland uses SUBstantial awards to promote positive behavior when teachers need to be away from the classroom. Substitute teachers get to decide if classes earn the award by showing expected behaviors. Our class recently earned a SUBstantial award which put us in the running for a school-wide drawing. We won and will be rewarded with a free Jimmy John’s lunch on Thursday, March 16th! Included in the lunch is a turkey or ham snack sized sub, cookie (allergy friendly), chips, and juice. Your child is welcome to opt out and purchase or bring their own lunch as well (no prior notice needed). Let me know if you have questions! Thanks!! Feb. 27-Mar. 3 we will be celebrating Read Across America with Seuss week in first grade! These fun theme days are completely optional. Here’s the outline for the week:
Monday – Fox in Socks (wear silly or mismatched socks) Tuesday – Green Eggs and Ham (wear green) Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday (wear clothes backwards, inside out, or mismatched) Thursday – The Cat in the Hat (wear a favorite hat) Friday – Sleep Book (wear school appropriate pjs and pack a flashlight if you have one) We will spend time reading lots of Dr. Seuss books and participate in lots of fun learning activities. Let me know if you have any questions! Dear First Grade Families,
