This is the time where we can really notice and celebrate big changes in your child's reading since the beginning of the year. Reading independence is being developed and strategies are being learned and applied. When your child is reading to you at home, do you wish you could do more than just listen? We are working on many comprehension strategies in school. Your child knows the main reason for reading is to understand, enjoy, and gain information from text. I encourage you to practice a 5-finger retelling of a story (see picture) with your child when they finish a book or chapter of a book. We are putting 'checking for understanding' into practice. Our class knows that when we struggle with being able to verbalize and show our understanding or retelling of a text, we need to go back and reread to gain a clearer understanding. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!
